USDC Lands in GCash: A Game-Changer for 100 Million Filipinos

GCash, the Philippines’ leading mobile wallet, has listed USD Coin USDC on its platform, linking its users to a global network of digital dollars.

The listing was announced in March 2025, with the aim to promote financial inclusion and provide a stable alternative for payments and savings.

The onboarding is done through GCash’s GCrypto feature, uniting traditional finance and digital assets in Southeast Asia.

Cracking the Code: How GCash Users Get Their Hands on USDC

Users of the mobile wallet can now buy, hold, and transfer USDC through GCrypto, the wallet’s crypto trading platform, commercially launched in 2023 following earlier pilot releases.

A complete verification through a Know Your Customer (KYC) process is required for users to be able to fully access the new feature—users must be 18 and above and possess profile details that have been updated within the last three years, according to the GCash Help Center

Verified users fund their GCrypto Trading Wallet with their in-app balance, subject to transaction caps for security. The process involves topping up the GCrypto wallet, selecting USDC, and executing trades, with pricing—including fees—updated every 10 seconds.

USDC’s stability, backed by Circle’s monthly third-party reserve audits, presents a safe choice to highly volatile cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

The company’s registered user base has climbed from 86 million in 2023, to an estimated 100 million by March 2025.

Arjun Varma, GCash’s Group Head of Wealth Management, commented on the recent development, “USDC makes payments and savings more accessible to Filipinos through a stable, internationally accepted digital dollar.”

Boom or Bust?  What USDC Means for GCash’s Millions

The integration offers the mobile wallet’s registered users faster and cheaper cross-border payments, addressing inefficiencies in the Philippines’ traditional financial systems, often criticized as slow and expensive.

USDC also provides a shield against peso volatility, a pressing issue in the local economy.

World Bank data from 2021 estimates 30% of Filipinos—around 34 million—do not own a traditional bank account, and GCash’s recent development could offer a digital financial gateway, though limited to KYC-compliant users.

Regulatory uncertainty poses a risk, but the mobile wallet operates under Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas licenses, and USDC’s reserves adhere to regulated standards.

Security is supported by GCash’s system and Circle’s transparency, yet unverified users are excluded due to KYC requirements.

The move could challenge traditional banks, potentially cutting costs and getting creative. The GCash 2024 beta launching in 16 countries, including the US and UK, is proof of GCash’s global ambition, fueled by speculation of a 2025 IPO still unconfirmed.
