Aave Breaks $60B Barrier in DeFi, Then Gets Hit by Phishing Scam

On Aug. 6, 2025, Aave, a leading decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocol, announced it surpassed $60 billion in net deposits across 14 networks, becoming the first DeFi platform to reach this milestone.

Token Terminal data shows deposits grew from $18 billion in August 2024, a testament to Aave’s growing role in crypto lending.

The milestone, as reported through the platform’s official media reports, reaffirmed users’ trust and network expansion. Within less than 24 hours, this record was overshadowed by a sponsored Google Ads phishing attack that exploited the protocol’s visibility.

Cybercriminals Target Aave with Fake Ad Campaign

On Aug. 7, 2025, blockchain security company PeckShield reported on X that scammers used Google Ads to promote fake investment sites, including aaxe.co.com, designed to mimic the official platform.

Those sites tricked users into connecting their cryptocurrency wallets, allowing attackers to execute transactions that could drain funds. The fact that the attack happened immediately after Aave’s milestone suggests scammers took advantage of the surge in public interest.

Some strong crypto advocates have issued warnings across crypto communities and social media that users should verify website URLs.

Following the attack, Aave is yet to issue a public statement to address the attack, and no financial losses have been confirmed as of Aug. 7, 2025.

There are also reports that Google took down the malicious ad by press time.

Protecting Your Crypto: Tips to Counter Scams

Security experts advise users to verify website URLs, use Revoke.cash to revoke wallet approvals, transfer funds to secure wallets if compromised, avoid reusing affected wallets, and disconnect from suspicious sites.

Aave has faced security incidents in the past, including a $287,000 hack of its Earning Farm in August 2023.

The recent phishing attack on Aug. 6, 2025, could lead to the loss of Aave-wrapped USDT, although there is no official confirmation of the statement regarding the scale of the attack at the moment.
