Compass Point Says Sell Coinbase, But Could the Market Prove Them Wrong?

Coinbase Global, Inc. stock, COIN, was downgraded by Compass Point due to fears over longevity and unsustainable valuation at a time of increased market challenges.

Despite the bearish outlook, analysts remain divided, with many maintaining a positive stance.

Coinbase’s stock closed at $318.17 on Aug. 4, 2025, showing volatility powered by the changing market forces and competitive pressures.

Why Compass Point Is Betting Against Coinbase’s High Price

Compass Point downgraded Coinbase from Neutral to Sell on Aug. 4, 2025, reducing its price target from $330 to $248, a 21% drop from the stock’s Friday close of $314.69, according to Yahoo Finance

Analyst Ed Engel noted that the exchange’s valuation, at 44x annualized Q3 EBITDA, lacks support due to decreasing retail demand, anticipated poor seasonality in August and September, and growing stablecoin competition.

The exchange reported Q2 subscription and services revenue of $655.8 million, missing Wall Street’s $715.2 million estimate by 8%. Engel also noted that reduced crypto treasury stock purchases, such as Strategy’s slowed $18 billion year-to-date bitcoin buys, are among the limitations holding back Coinbase’s potential.

Stablecoin competition, especially from Circle—also downgraded to Sell by Compass Point—is pressuring Coinbase’s revenue channels. The downgrade shows near-term challenges in a volatile crypto market, with Compass Point predicting potential downward pressure on the stock.

How Investors Are Reacting to Coinbase’s Challenges

Despite the downgrade, the company retains a mixed but overall positive analyst consensus. Bloomberg reports 19 Buy, 16 Hold, and 5 Sell ratings.

The average price target is estimated to be about $351.29, suggesting a 10.4% increase from the close of Aug. 4 at $318.17.

Benchmark maintained a Buy rating with a $421 target, noting the company’s “one-stop Amazon” crypto services platform, especially in derivatives. Wall Street Zen upgraded Coinbase to Hold from Sell, contributing to an intraday peak of $324.00 on Aug. 4, 2025.

Keefe, Bruyette & Woods and Barclays maintained their ratings—Market Perform and Equal Weight, respectively—but lowered price targets from $359 to $352, a sign of cautious optimism.

COIN, with a 52-week range of $142.58 to $444.65, increased by 1% from $314.69 to $318.17, showing its market resilience despite conflicting analyst views.

What’s Next?

Coinbase faces a challenging crypto market, with declining retail demand and rising stablecoin competition, especially from Circle’s USDC, influencing its outlook.

However, investor interest remains, with Zacks Investment Research making Coinbase a top-searched stock and a strong buy candidate for August 2025. The $351.29 consensus price target shows growth potential, with Compass Point’s bearish view in the minority.

Coinbase’s focus on diversified services, such as crypto derivatives, positions it for long-term growth, though near-term valuation concerns remain.
