Ghibli Coins Surge: AI-Generated Studio Ghibli Images Fuel Crypto Craze
Ghibli-inspired meme coins are surging in popularity following the viral spread of AI-generated images in the distinctive Studio Ghibli style.
The trend began after OpenAI launched its image generation feature for ChatGPT-4o on March 25, allowing users to create illustrations mimicking the iconic aesthetic of Studio Ghibli — best known for films like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. These whimsical visuals quickly went viral across social media, drawing interest from both anime fans and crypto enthusiasts.
Tech Giants Amplify the Ghibli Trend
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Tesla CEO Elon Musk added fuel to the trend by sharing AI portraits of themselves that used the theme. While neither directly promoted any related meme coin, Musk’s history of influencing crypto markets — particularly tokens like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu — drew added attention to the surge in Ghibli-themed coins.

Among the most notable tokens is Ghiblification (GHIBLI), which launched less than 24 hours ago and has already reached a market capitalization exceeding $20.8 million. Trading at approximately $0.02083, GHIBLI has skyrocketed by over 39,000% since its inception, according to DEX Screener.

On the Solana blockchain, another similarly-themed meme coin has reportedly surged by nearly 40,000% since its launch on March 26. The buzz has triggered the creation of at least 20 other Ghibli-inspired tokens in the past day alone.
A Glimmer of Hope for a Struggling Market
The sudden popularity of these coins has reignited hopes for a revival in the meme coin market, which has declined by 57% since December. Some traders interpret the Ghibli coin phenomenon as a potential sign of renewed momentum.

Severely needed
Crypto trader Sachs shared his optimism on X, saying, “I’m praying the meme coin runs to $100M to bring some hopes into these markets. Severely needed.”
Trend-Driven Coins: Boom or Bust?
The Ghibli token frenzy echoes previous culturally driven surges in the meme coin space. One example is CHILLGUY, a Solana-based token launched in November, which capitalized on the viral “Just a chill guy” meme. It peaked at a $643 million market cap but has since dropped by 95%, serving as a stark reminder of the volatility in trend-based tokens.

While it’s unclear whether Ghibli-themed coins will sustain their momentum, their explosive entry reflects how quickly pop culture can shape crypto markets — for better or worse.
