AI Agent Tokens to Outperform Meme Coins in 2025, but Momentum May Fade by 2026, Says Venture Capitalist
The cryptocurrency market is undergoing a notable shift as AI agent tokens continue to gain ground on meme coins. According to Haseeb Qureshi, managing partner at Dragonfly Capital, the “AI agent craze” is expected to dominate throughout 2025 but may lose steam by 2026.
“Meme coins will continue to lose market share to ‘AI agent’ coins. I consider this a migration from financial nihilism to financial over-optimism,” Qureshi said in a Jan. 1 post on X.
AI Agent Tokens Are a Short-Lived Craze
While the rise of AI agent tokens has captured the crypto community’s attention, Qureshi predicts their appeal won’t be sustainable. He believes that as more advanced AI tools emerge, interest in social media-centric AI chatbots will wane.
“This is not the long-term disruption to watch out for from AI, but it will be CT’s fixation because it is the most social,” Qureshi remarked, referring to Crypto Twitter’s obsession with trending tech.

AI chatbots like “Aixbt” have already proven useful, providing users with insights and market predictions. However, their vulnerability to manipulation poses significant risks. “Current agents can easily be manipulated into saying crazy things that damage their brands, or can be jailbroken to steal all of their resources,” Qureshi warned.
Recent data reflects this ongoing shift. According to CoinMarketCap:
- Meme coin trading volume dropped by 21.5% over the past 24 hours, while trading volume among top AI and data tokens increased by 7.95%.
- The total market cap for AI agent tokens stands at $54.4 billion, despite dipping 1.66% over the past 30 days.
- In contrast, the total memecoin market cap plummeted by 17.7% over the same period.
This trend suggests a growing preference for AI agent tokens associated with utility and innovation rather than speculative assets like meme coins.
2026: A Tipping Point
Qureshi forecasts a “sudden reversal” in 2026 as the AI agent chatbot market saturates. “The chatbots will become so ubiquitous that people will get turned off by them. Sentiment will reverse,” he explained.

The idea that crypto sentiment evolves slowly, only to pivot dramatically, resonates with broader trends in the industry. Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley compared the rise of AI agents to the advent of corporations in the 19th century, highlighting their ability to perform autonomous functions like entering contracts, hiring, and owning assets.
Top Performers and Future Outlook
In the past week, AI-focused cryptocurrencies like Virtuals Protocol (up 57.3%), Bittensor TAO (up 10.6%), and Theta Network (up 6.11%) led gains among the top 100 cryptocurrencies.
Crypto trader Mckenna, with nearly 95,000 followers, expressed optimism about the sector’s growth in 2025. “Pay attention, and you will get paid,” Mckenna advised.
While the rise of AI agents has parallels with significant technological shifts in history, their long-term relevance remains uncertain. As Qureshi noted, “By next year and the next generation of agents, maybe Aixbt will hallucinate a little less, go a little deeper, have a little smarter takes. But how much will you even notice? It’ll probably feel the same to most people.”

As the crypto market migrates from meme coins to AI agent tokens, 2025 promises to be a pivotal year for this emerging sector. However, investors should remain cautious, as the allure of AI agents may fade with time, echoing the cyclical nature of the crypto industry’s fascination with new trends.
